Engagement Rate Calculator

Measure the engagement rate of an Instagram, TikTok or YouTube account and see how it stacks up against typical ranges.

These bands are general reference ranges, not a guarantee. Engagement varies a lot by niche and audience size, and smaller accounts usually see higher rates than large ones.

The engagement rate formula

Engagement rate is the share of the audience that interacts with a post. The base differs by platform:

Instagram
(likes + comments) / followers × 100
TikTok, YouTube
(likes + comments + shares) / views × 100

What is a good engagement rate?

There is no single magic number, but these ranges are a useful reference. Instagram is measured against followers, TikTok and YouTube against views.

LevelInstagram (by followers)TikTok, YouTube (by views)
Excellent> 6%> 15%
High3.5% to 6%9% to 15%
Solid1% to 3.5%4% to 9%
Low< 1%< 4%

Smaller accounts usually reach higher rates than large ones, so compare against creators of a similar size.

What affects engagement rate

A few things move the number up or down:

  • Audience size. Nano and micro accounts usually engage more per follower than large accounts.
  • Niche and format. Some niches and formats naturally get more comments, saves and shares than others.
  • Audience quality. Real, active followers engage. Inactive or purchased followers drag the rate down.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement rate?+

On Instagram, a rate between 1% and 3.5% of followers is typical, and above 6% is excellent. On TikTok and YouTube, engagement is measured against views and the numbers are naturally higher. Smaller accounts usually score higher than large ones.

How do you calculate engagement rate?+

Add the likes and comments (and shares for videos), divide by the base and multiply by 100. On Instagram the base is followers, on TikTok and YouTube it is average views.

Why is my engagement rate low?+

A low rate can be normal for a very large account. On a smaller account it often means the audience is not very active, or that some followers are inactive or purchased. Look at the quality of comments, not only the totals.

Does engagement rate matter for brand deals?+

Yes. Brands often care more about engagement than raw follower count, because an engaged audience is more likely to act. A solid engagement rate can matter more than a big following.
