Half the Canadian year is hostile to outdoor filming, and pretending otherwise is why so many creators bill well from May to September and nearly nothing from November to March. Winter is a planning problem, and it has a straightforward solution.
Daylight is the first constraint
In December, usable daylight in much of the country runs a few hours. That does not leave room for improvisation. Shoots get scheduled inside a narrow window, and anything outdoors gets booked the day the forecast allows, not the day the calendar says.
Build the indoor corner in September
One clean wall, one surface, one light that does not look like a light, and a spot where sound is dry. That corner will carry most of your winter output, and building it in autumn costs nothing while building it in January costs you jobs. Show it in your portfolio so clients know it exists.
Film the outdoor year in advance
Anything that needs green, sun or a street scene gets filmed in September and October for use through winter. Brands publishing summer content in January do it because someone planned ahead, and that someone gets paid twice: once for the shoot and once for the reuse.
The cold breaks equipment
Batteries drain fast, condensation forms when a cold phone comes indoors, and gloves make everything slower. Carry spare batteries close to your body, let equipment warm up in a bag before opening it, and add time to every outdoor estimate. None of this is optional at minus twenty.
Winter is a category, not a gap
Comfort food, indoor fitness, skincare for dry air, winter sport, home and heating: entire categories peak precisely when everyone else stops filming. A creator set up for indoor work in January faces almost no competition and clients who need content urgently.
