Your calendar is not the constraint. The parcel is.
Everywhere else in this guide, distance is treated as irrelevant, because creator work is filmed where you are and delivered as a link. That remains true here in one direction and false in the other. Your files leave instantly. The product has to arrive first.
The brief that breaks is the one with a mainland delivery date
A brand in Lisbon or Porto plans a shoot the way it always does, adds the delivery time it is used to, and sends the product.
What follows is familiar to anyone working from the islands. The parcel takes longer than the brand expected, or it sits somewhere waiting on paperwork, and the shoot window quietly moves. Nobody did anything wrong, and the person who looks late is you.
Ask for the shipping date, not the deadline
This is the whole fix and it takes one line in your first reply.
Do not ask when they need the video. Ask when the product is being sent, and from where. Then add the transit time yourself and propose a delivery date built on that, out loud, in writing. A brand that hears this once will remember it for every future brief, and you have moved a risk you cannot control into a date everyone agreed to.
What the islands actually sell
Landscape a mainland creator cannot reach in a morning, obviously. Ocean, cliffs, volcanic ground, weather that changes inside an hour.
And, more usefully, not Lisbon
The Portuguese market is saturated with the same backdrops. Tiled walls, a particular kind of light, a viewpoint everyone recognises.
A brand that has run four campaigns filmed in the same three neighbourhoods has a real problem, and it is one you solve by existing somewhere else. That is worth saying plainly in a pitch, because most buyers have felt the sameness without naming it.
| What the brand assumes | What actually happens | What to write in the first message |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery takes what it takes at home | It takes longer, sometimes much longer | Ask for the shipping date and the carrier |
| The product will arrive intact | Liquids and fragile items are the usual casualties | Ask what is being sent before agreeing a date |
| One shoot day is one shoot day | Weather here changes inside an hour | Offer a window rather than a date for outdoor work |
| You can pop out and reshoot | Some locations are an hour of driving away | Agree the number of locations up front |
| Returns are simple | They are the same problem in reverse | Say whether the product is going back before you quote |
The second row causes the most silent damage. A leaking bottle does not generate a complaint, it generates a delay that looks like yours.
One administrative note
Madeira and the Azores are autonomous regions with their own arrangements on several fiscal matters, and those arrangements change.
Nothing in this article is advice on your situation. Check what applies to you with the Portal das Finanças or an accountant who works with the region, and do it before your first invoice rather than after it.

Frequently asked questions
Do mainland brands avoid working with island creators?
Not deliberately. They forget about shipping, discover it mid project, and remember the friction rather than the cause. Naming the transit time in your first message prevents almost all of it.
Should I charge more for the delay?
No, price the work as usual and move the date instead. What costs you money is absorbing a delay silently, not the delay itself.
What is the strongest thing to offer a Lisbon brand?
That you are not in Lisbon. The market is full of the same backdrops, and a buyer who has noticed will understand the value immediately.
