Surrey is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada and one of the most multilingual. For a creator that changes the fundamental question from how to film to who should be on camera.

The audience is often not English speaking

Large Punjabi, Hindi, Tagalog, Mandarin and Korean speaking communities, many of whom consume media primarily in those languages. A brand advertising only in English in this market is talking past a very large part of its potential customers.

Language specific creators are the scarce resource

There is no shortage of people who can film. There is a real shortage of creators who can deliver a credible product video in Punjabi or Tagalog with the right cultural register, and those creators can charge accordingly because nobody can substitute for them.

Cultural register matters more than translation

A translated script delivered in another language still sounds like a translated script. The video has to be filmed by somebody who speaks that way naturally, with references and humour that belong to that community, or the audience recognises it as an outsider talking.

The local business base is substantial

Retail, food, construction, trades, health services and a large ecommerce layer. Many of these businesses are owned by people from the same communities they serve, and they buy video in the language of their customers rather than in the language of the province.

Vancouver is close but different

Downtown Vancouver is forty minutes away and pays higher rates for a different kind of work. Keeping both markets running is straightforward and it is what most established creators here do.
