A portfolio is not a showreel. A brand looking at your profile is trying to answer one question: can this person make the video I need, in the language I need, without me having to explain everything twice.
Three pieces are enough to start
One demonstration, one testimonial, one problem and solution. Different products, different settings, all under thirty seconds and vertical. Three focused pieces beat ten that all look the same, because variety is what proves you can be briefed rather than repeat yourself.
Film with products you already own
Nobody checks whether you were paid for a piece. What matters is that the video is real, the sound is clean and the product is treated seriously. Waiting for a brand to send you something is how creators spend a year with an empty profile.
A bilingual sample doubles your odds
If you can work in both languages, show it: the same product, thirty seconds in English and thirty in French. That single pair answers a question every Canadian brand has and that almost no profile answers. It is the highest return piece you can film here.
Show the deliverable, not just the video
Brands care about what they receive. Mention that you deliver vertical and square, subtitles as a separate file, and a version without voice. Saying it plainly puts you ahead of creators who leave the client to discover it during revisions.
Keep it current and small
Replace the weakest piece every couple of months rather than adding endlessly. A profile with four strong recent pieces reads better than one with twelve, half of which are two years old and none of which match what the brand needs today.
