How many followers do you need to start? Zero. That is not an encouraging phrase, it is the definition of the job: you sell a production, not an audience.

In Costa Rica that answer is even truer than elsewhere, for reasons of economic geography.

Your buyer is not in the country

The domestic market is small, and tourism occupies a decisive place in it. A large share of what gets commissioned therefore comes from companies located elsewhere: regional brands wanting to speak to Central America, travel businesses wanting to show the country, foreign companies looking for Latin American Spanish.

None of those buyers will look at your profile. What they look at is whether you can deliver what they cannot produce themselves: a real person, on site, filming in the language they are targeting.

That shifts the only advantage that counts. It is not your audience, it is your position: you are where they are not.

Language is your most profitable variable

Many orders come in Spanish, many others in English, and some ask for both versions of the same piece.

Be precise about what you can deliver. There is a difference between speaking a language day to day, reading it aloud without stumbling, and improvising in it on camera. Claiming a level you do not have gets paid for on shoot day, in lost takes and in a client who does not call back.

And invoice the second version. It is not the same video dubbed, it is a second shoot: same setups, different script, different takes, different subtitle proofreading.

What the brand looks at instead

Your pieces. Six videos showing what you can do replace any figure. It is the only asset that counts at the start.

Your reliability. Delivering on the date, in the requested format, with correctly named files. Many fail there, and that is what gets the others called back.

What you can show on location. A place, a light, a setting a studio cannot reproduce. For travel and overseas buyers, that is precisely the product.

Your rights. Being able to state what your price covers, on which channels and for how long, makes you read as a professional before the first delivery.

Where to start

Pick two fields you genuinely know, and film six pieces with products you already use. Nobody will ask whether it was a paid job.

Decide a price and hold it. The rate question arrives in the second message, and answering that it depends ends the conversation.

Then make yourself findable, stating your location and your languages. That is what makes you appear in the search of a brand that does not know you and is looking for exactly what you are.

What is useless at the start

Buying equipment: a recent phone and daylight cover almost everything commissioned.

Inflating an account: inactive followers change nothing in a UGC application.

Waiting to be ready: the first video is always the worst one, and shooting it is how you get to the second.

What can be built with no audience

Two samples, a price grid, a stated lead time and a receiving address for parcels.

What is useless at the start

A followed account, a long biography, a list of software, a personal logo.

When an audience becomes useful again

It does if you decide to sell distribution too, meaning publishing on your account for a fee. That is a second job, with its own rules, and it can complement the first.

But it is a choice, not a prerequisite. Plenty of creators live on production alone, without anyone knowing their name.
