Camera fear is always described as a matter between you and the lens. For many creators in Costa Rica, that is not where it plays out.
It plays out in the hallway, in the kitchen, on the pavement across the street. The real block is not the device, it is speaking out loud in front of people who know you.
The gaze of relatives weighs more than that of strangers
Filming at home often means filming in a house where other people live. In a neighbourhood where everyone knows everyone, an open door is enough for you to be heard.
Publishing in front of ten thousand strangers costs nothing: they are abstract. Speaking in front of an aunt walking behind you costs a lot, because you will see her again on Sunday.
That gap explains why so many people film very well alone and shut down completely as soon as others are around. It is not a lack of confidence, it is a social situation.
Manufacturing a place where nobody passes
You do not need a dedicated room, you need a corner and a time slot.
Find the most neutral wall in the house and the hours when traffic is lowest: early morning, or during school hours. Always film in the same spot: it removes the setup, and removing the setup removes the apprehension.
Headphones also change a lot. They cut out the world, and they tell others, without your having to say it, that you are working.
The practice that actually works
Film three takes and delete the first two without watching them. The rule matters more than it looks: it removes the stakes from the first sentence, which is the only genuinely hard moment.
Speak to one specific person, not to an audience. Choose someone you know, imagine explaining this product to them because they are hesitating to buy it. The voice changes immediately, it stops being a presentation voice.
And keep your hands busy with the product. A large part of stiffness comes from hands that do not know where to go.
Sound before image
A badly lit video still gets watched. A badly recorded one gets skipped.
Filming outdoors, under a fan, near a road or during a downpour is enough to make a take unusable. Always listen to ten seconds on headphones before the real take, and change corner rather than hoping to repair it in the edit.
What makes someone look natural
A short sentence, one idea per sentence, and a breath in between. People who seem at ease do not speak better: they speak more slowly and leave silences.
Look at the lens, not at your own image on the screen. It is the most visible mistake, and it produces a shifty gaze even when everything else is good.
Finally, do not chase perfect delivery. A repeated word, a hesitation, a laugh, those are exactly the signs that make people believe in a real person, and that is what the brand buys.
