Annecy is small, expensive and unusually well connected to money. The lake and the mountains bring premium tourism, the outdoor industry is next door, and Geneva is forty minutes away with clients who pay in Swiss francs. For a creator, the question is not whether there is work, it is whether your production standard matches what those clients expect.
Three client pools
Outdoor and sport
Equipment and clothing brands, resorts, guides, bike and ski shops. The content that sells here is proof: the product used in real conditions, not styled on a table.
Premium tourism and hospitality
Hotels, restaurants, lake activities, spas, events. Their customers arrive from abroad, so a second language is often part of the brief.
Swiss clients across the border
Geneva and the surrounding canton have companies with budgets that make French rates look modest, and they are used to a level of finish. Working for them is a different business, with its own invoicing rules, currency and expectations.
The standard is the barrier and the opportunity
In a market this visual, an unstable handheld shot is not charming, it is a reason not to hire you. A tripod, a microphone, consistent colour and clean framing put you above most of the local supply immediately.
For mountain and lake work, add the practical skills: shooting into strong reflected light, cold that drains batteries, and conditions that change within an hour. Come back with usable footage the first time and you become the person they call.
Rates
The local market pays above the French average. A single video commonly runs 120 to 200 euros when starting, and 300 to 600 euros with a portfolio that matches the local standard. Packs of three to five sell between 800 and 1,800 euros. Outdoor brands with paid media rights and hotel campaigns are negotiated higher.
Swiss clients are a different level again, but so are their expectations: exact deadlines, a proper invoice, and no improvisation. Quote in the client's currency, agree exchange and payment terms in writing, and check with an accountant how to invoice outside the European Union properly.
Seasonality is the whole calendar
Summer around the lake, winter in the mountains, and two quiet shoulder seasons. Brands commission the winter campaign in late summer and the summer campaign in winter, so briefs arrive out of season. Use the quiet weeks to shoot evergreen product content and to sell to clients elsewhere.
The practical part
Auto entrepreneur status covers invoicing from day one, with contributions on what you actually collect and the VAT threshold to watch. For outdoor shoots, agree who is responsible for safety, whether a guide is required, and what insurance covers the equipment. It is not paperwork for its own sake: a mountain shoot has real risk, and clients notice who takes it seriously.
