The auto entrepreneur status is the formality that separates a creator working with brands and agencies from one working only with acquaintances. Without an invoice a company cannot pay you, and the clients who pay best are companies.

Why the invoice decides your client list

A digitally native brand, an agency or a brand with a marketing department keeps books that must balance. Spending on creative is recorded as a contracted service, which requires an invoice in your name.

Without one, your options shrink to small jobs paid person to person. With one, you enter the same circuit as any production supplier.

Registration in practice

The start of activity declaration is made online, free of charge, through the single business portal. You receive an identification number that must appear on all your invoices.

Choose the declared activity carefully: creating video content for brands is a service provision, with the corresponding contribution rate. If your situation is unclear, a single consultation with an accountant costs less than a correction later.

The VAT exemption

As long as your revenue stays below the applicable threshold, you do not charge VAT and you place the corresponding legal wording on the invoice.

Two practical consequences. First, your prices look more attractive to small structures. Second, you do not reclaim VAT on your equipment purchases. And above all, watch the threshold: crossing it changes your obligations mid year, and it is better anticipated than discovered.

What your invoice must carry

  • Your details and identification number, along with the client's.
  • A sequential number and an issue date.
  • A real description of the service: production of video pieces and, on a separate line, the usage licence.
  • The price before tax and, where applicable, the exemption wording.
  • Payment terms and date, along with the applicable late payment penalties.

Splitting production and licence into two lines puts in writing that advertising use is a distinct item, and makes it easier to charge for extending it later.

Contributions, the real trap

They are calculated on what you collect, not on your profit. Buy a microphone and a tripod: that does not reduce your contributions.

The discipline that saves you: at every payment received, immediately set aside the percentage due in a separate account. That is the difference between a creator who lasts and one who quits after a year.

When to start

When you see income repeating, not before and not long after. Many do two or three small jobs, confirm demand exists, then register so they can accept the first serious client.

Where to go next

The status does not make you a better creator, but it opens the door to clients who pay well. Our guide on how to become a UGC creator covers the rest of the path.
