Here is the thing nobody warns a new creator about in Lisbon: a large share of the companies that will hire you do not want Portuguese. They want English, because their team is international, their customers are elsewhere, and Portugal is where the office happens to be.
That single fact reshapes how you position yourself here.
Who is buying, and in which language
| Who hires in Lisbon | The language they actually want |
|---|---|
| International startups with a Lisbon office | English, almost always |
| Portuguese ecommerce selling at home | European Portuguese |
| Hotels and short stay accommodation | English first, then German or French |
| Local retail, clinics and services | Portuguese, and nothing else |
| Exporters using Lisbon as a base | Portuguese plus one export language |
A creator who is comfortable on camera in both languages is not slightly more employable here, they are in a different bracket. It is the cheapest skill upgrade available in this city and almost nobody advertises it.
What the city costs you
Rent belongs in your rate
Lisbon is the most expensive place in the country to live, and a rate that works in Braga does not work here. That is not a reason to overcharge, it is a reason to know your floor before a client asks, so you do not discover it halfway through a negotiation.
The free sets are still free
Tiled facades, viewpoints, the light coming off the river in the late afternoon. Brands from northern Europe pay real money for that backdrop and you have it at walking distance. It costs nothing and it is the main compensation for what the rent takes.
The tourism trap
Tourism is the loudest client in Lisbon and the one that quietly eats a creator's year. The work is seasonal, it concentrates into a few months, and it trains you to be available rather than to be specific.
The creators who do well here keep tourism as one client type among several, not as the business. A clinic, a software company and an ecommerce brand pay through the winter, when the hotels have stopped answering.
Where to start
Pick the international angle first. Write two lines in English in your profile, film one sample in English, and say plainly that you deliver in both languages.
That single move puts you in front of a set of Lisbon clients who currently look abroad, because they assume nobody local does what they need.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need English to work in Lisbon?
Not to work, but it roughly doubles the client base open to you.
Is tourism a good client?
As one client type, yes. As the whole business, it leaves you idle half the year.
Are Lisbon rates higher than the rest of Portugal?
They tend to be, and so is the cost of living. Know your floor before negotiating.
What should my first sample show?
The thing that separates you locally. Right now, that is usually a version in English.
