The portfolio is the only thing a brand looks at before hiring you. In Costa Rica it has a particular trap: the landscape is so beautiful that it is easy to build a gorgeous travel account that sells nothing.
What a UGC portfolio is
It is not a pretty feed. It is a collection of pieces proving you can film a product with good light, good sound and a script that sells.
The brand projects: if this is what they do with someone else's product, how would mine look? Your whole portfolio should make that projection easy.
The landscape trap
A video of a sunset in Guanacaste is beautiful and says nothing about your ability to sell a product. If your portfolio is only landscape, you will be hired as a travel photographer, not as a UGC creator.
Use the surroundings as a set, not as the protagonist. The product in the foreground, the landscape behind. That difference in framing completely changes who calls you.
How many pieces are enough
Between six and ten. Fewer looks like luck, more bores whoever is reviewing.
And a rule that saves time: six pieces in one sector beat ten spread across ten. Specialisation shows and gets you the work you actually want.
What to film when you have no clients
Use products you already own, in the niche that interests you. Nobody requires that the brand paid you. What is judged is the execution.
Cover the formats brands genuinely buy:
- Talking head testimonial: you describe the problem and how the product solves it.
- Usage demonstration: hands, detail, result.
- Short unboxing: opening, textures, first impression.
- Before and after: the format that performs best in paid media.
- Three different hooks for the same product: it proves you understand how ads are tested.
That last point impresses more than anything else, because almost nobody includes it.
How to present it
One link, not ten attachments. It can be a cloud folder, a simple page or your profile on a UGC marketplace.
Each piece with one line of context: product, format, which platform it is for. And at the top, three facts: your niches, your languages and your usual delivery time.
If you speak English, say it in the first line. In Costa Rica that single fact opens the door to clients paying in dollars.
How it evolves
Every paid job should replace a practice piece, with the client's permission. Within six months your portfolio stops being a demonstration and becomes a track record, and the price rises with it.
Where to go next
An honest, well chosen portfolio is worth more than any sales pitch. Our guide on how to become a UGC creator explains how to turn it into clients.
