The auto entrepreneur regime is the best starting point for a UGC creator in France, and the worst possible regime beyond a certain level. Knowing where that point lies stops you contributing on turnover most of which leaves as expenses.
The three switching signals
Your costs become significant
Under this regime, contributions are charged on turnover, not on profit. If you buy equipment, subcontract editing and travel a lot, you are contributing on money you do not keep.
You are approaching the ceilings
The regime has turnover thresholds. Exceeding them durably takes you out of the scheme, so it is better to anticipate.
You no longer sell only your own work
You subcontract, you employ, you resell production. At that point you are running a company, not an independent activity.
A fourth, quieter signal: large contracts. Some brands and agencies prefer to contract with a company for reasons of liability and volume.
What a company brings, and what it costs
It lets you deduct real expenses, limit liability and choose your remuneration. It also brings formal accounting, annual accounts, an accountant and obligations that do not pause when you take three weeks off.
The choice between the available forms is not cosmetic: it changes your social protection, your taxation and the annual cost of the structure. It is exactly the kind of decision made once, with a professional, using your real figures.
What to prepare beforehand
Separate bank accounts. Keep clean records of income and expenses. Have a standard contract and a rate card. And above all, know your real profit, not just your turnover.
If those four things are in place, moving to a company is an accounting formality. If they are not, changing structure only adds obligations to an existing mess.
The short answer
If you invoice irregularly, alone, with few costs: stay as an auto entrepreneur and spend your energy finding recurring clients. If your costs weigh, if you are approaching the ceilings or if you employ someone: do the maths with an accountant.
