In France, agencies are the structuring client of the UGC market. They bring regular volume and real budgets. They are also where most creators give away rights without invoicing for them.

The French landscape

Social media and performance agencies are the regular buyers. They decide fast, test a lot of creative and call back whoever delivers well.

Large traditional advertising agencies buy too, but with long processes, several stakeholders and longer payment terms. Not a good first client.

And there is a third player often forgotten: production studios that subcontract the creator side of a campaign. They pay well and are permanently looking for new faces.

How they buy

They do not buy a video: they buy a reliable supplier. What they value, in this order: delivering on the date, understanding the brief without twenty rounds of back and forth, invoicing cleanly.

In a market as mature as France, reliability beats pure creativity by a wide margin. A solid creator who always delivers in five days works every month; a brilliant one who delivers late does not come back.

What they pay

Less per piece than a direct client, because they have their margin. They compensate with volume and continuity.

If a direct brand pays you two hundred and fifty euros per video, an agency might offer a hundred and eighty. With four guaranteed pieces a month, that difference stops mattering.

What should not be accepted is a volume rate without volume. An "agency price" for a single video is simply a low price.

What they will try to get without paying

  • The perpetual, all media, worldwide assignment, presented as non negotiable.
  • Advertising rights included in the production price.
  • Unlimited rounds of changes, because the advertiser keeps changing their mind.
  • Raw footage, to cut other pieces without paying you.
  • Category exclusivity, which closes an entire sector to you.

None of those requests is illegitimate. All of them can be priced.

The terms

Thirty days from the invoice is common, forty five days end of month appears in large groups. Negotiate that the clock runs from delivery, and state the late payment penalties provided by law on the invoice. You will almost never apply them, but their presence changes the accounts department's behaviour.

How to reach them

LinkedIn works remarkably well in France for reaching the creative or production lead directly. Short message, three examples, your rate, your turnaround.
