In a small market, specialising feels risky: it seems to reduce your opportunities. In Costa Rica the opposite is true, and there is a concrete reason.

Why specialising works better in a small market

When there are few professional creators, being "the one who films hotels in Guanacaste" or "the one who does coffee and agricultural exports" makes you the default option for an entire sector.

A generalist in San Jose competes with hundreds of profiles. A regional specialist competes with two or three, and clients call them directly.

The formula almost nobody uses: niche plus region

This is the specifically Costa Rican move. "UGC creator for tourism on the South Pacific coast" is an infinitely more sellable positioning than "UGC creator".

When a hotel in Uvita needs to film, it is not looking for the best creator in the country: it is looking for someone who can be there on Tuesday. That combination of speciality and location is your biggest competitive advantage.

The sectors that pay well

  • Tourism and hospitality. The largest and best paid, but seasonal.
  • Coffee, cacao and agricultural exports. Solid budgets, international clients, excellent visual stories.
  • Health, dentistry and wellness. Fed by medical tourism, pays in dollars and buys all year.
  • Free zone companies. Corporate content, very little competition between creators.
  • Natural cosmetics and sustainable products. A growing sector with an international audience.

The ones that pay less

Neighbourhood restaurants, small shops and local businesses. They build a portfolio quickly, but they do not sustain a business.

How to choose yours

Three questions.

Do you have real context?

If you know the sector, you understand the client's problem. That shows on camera and in the brief.

Does it buy all year or only in season?

Ideally, pick one seasonal niche that pays a lot and one non seasonal niche that provides stability.

Can you physically be there?

In tourism, location is part of the niche.

The mistake of chasing tourism alone

It is the most visible sector and the most contested on social media. Many creators choose it by default and then go hungry seven months a year.

Coffee, health and free zone companies are less glamorous and pay as well or better, all year round.

Where to go next

A clear niche makes your portfolio, your media kit and your outreach work together. Our guide on how to become a UGC creator explains how to build that set.
