A view is not a result. It is the most quoted metric in UGC reporting and the one that says least about money. If the brand does not decide in advance what it will measure, the test ends in opinion.
The three numbers that matter
Cost per usable creative
Not cost per delivered video, but per video that passed approval and went live. If five out of ten are discarded, the real cost has doubled, and the problem is usually the brief.
Acquisition cost with that creative
A creator video is not a campaign, it is a piece. The right comparison is between creatives running on the same budget and the same audience.
Creative lifespan
How many days until performance drops. That number defines how many videos a month you need, and it is the only one that turns UGC into a process instead of an experiment.
What to measure at each stage
Retention in the first three seconds tells you whether the hook works. Retention to the end tells you whether the script holds. Clicks tell you whether the offer was clear. Conversion tells you whether the product delivers what the video promised, and this is where many brands discover the problem was not the video.
In organic, look at saves and shares before likes: they correlate most closely with real intent.
How to build an honest test
Run at least four different creatives at the same time, on the same budget, to the same audience, and let them run long enough to escape the noise.
Change one thing at a time when you want to learn: the hook, the format, the creator. If you change everything at once you will have a winner without knowing why.
Store the result somewhere the team actually looks. A library of hooks that worked is worth more than any polished report.
The most common measurement mistakes
Comparing UGC with studio production on cost per video rather than cost per result.
Judging a creative on one day of data.
Replacing a creator because one video underperformed, when the problem was the offer.
Not naming videos with a consistent convention, which makes it impossible to know later which piece produced the result.
Where to go next
Measuring properly is what separates a brand that scales UGC from a brand that tests it and gives up. Our complete UGC guide for brands covers briefing, usage rights and running creator content as a repeatable process.
