There is a moment in every Argentine creator's career when a brand replies that they loved the work but need an invoice. If you do not have monotributo, that client is lost. Which is why this piece of paperwork, apparently administrative, is really the most important commercial decision of your first months.

Why invoicing decides your ceiling

A formal company, an agency or any organisation that accounts for its spending cannot pay you without a receipt. It is not bad will: their accounting simply has nowhere to put the money.

Without monotributo, your market is limited to small businesses that pay by transfer and accept working without documentation. With monotributo, you open up agencies, mid sized ecommerce, clinics, companies and, above all, clients abroad.

What monotributo is, simply

It is a simplified regime that bundles tax and contributions into a single monthly payment. It assigns you a category based on what you bill per year, and it allows you to issue electronic invoices for your services.

For a content creator the logic is direct: you register, choose the matching services activity, start in the lowest category if you are beginning, and move up when your billing rises. It is an afternoon of paperwork, not a project.

What to be clear about from the start

Three things save you trouble later.

First, keep track of what you bill month by month: your category depends on it, and staying too low or going over without recategorising creates headaches. Second, the invoice is not just paper: it is your proof that the work existed and what was agreed. Third, if your volume grows fast or you start billing a lot abroad, talk to an accountant before the problem appears. It costs little and avoids surprises.

Invoicing abroad

This is where the best rates are and also where the most questions come up. Exporting services from Argentina has its own treatment, different from a local sale, and payment arrives through specific channels with their own conversion.

Two practical rules: always agree the currency, the amount and who pays the transfer fees in writing before starting, and consult an Argentine accountant before your first large contract in dollars. It is the one point in this whole job where improvising is expensive.

Common mistakes

Postponing registration until the big client appears, and losing them because you cannot invoice. Taking payment without an invoice from a formal company, which then cannot account for the expense and does not call you again. And failing to recategorise when billing rises, which is the most expensive mistake and the easiest to avoid.

Where to go next

Monotributo does not make you a better creator, but it lets you charge the people who pay well. Once you have it, the next step is the portfolio and the price: our guide on how to become a UGC creator covers both.
