Negotiating is not fighting. It is explaining what your price includes and what it does not. Most creators lose money not because they negotiate badly, but because they never decided in advance what they were willing to give up.
Before the conversation
Set three numbers and do not change them during the call: your ideal price, your acceptable price and your floor, below which you say no.
Without that floor written down, any pressure lowers it. With it, the negotiation becomes a calm conversation.
The four answers that protect your price
"That is a lot for us."
Do not lower the price: lower the scope. "I can do that amount with two videos instead of three." The price per piece stays intact.
"The next job will be bigger."
It almost never is. Answer: "Great, when that project comes we can look at volume pricing. Let us close this one at list price."
"Another creator charges us half."
Answer with what your delivery includes: three hooks, proofread subtitles, delivery in five days, a clear licence. Comparing is not the same as matching.
"Can we also use it in ads?"
This is the one that leaves the most money on the table. The answer is always: "Yes, the paid media licence is quoted separately, thirty to a hundred per cent extra depending on duration."
How to raise your rate
Do not announce an increase to current clients overnight. Apply the new price to new clients and wait two or three months.
When demand is stable, tell recurring clients a month in advance and offer them a package at the old price before the date. Many take it, and those who leave make room for better clients.
The Argentine detail
Quote in dollars and state in writing the applicable exchange rate and the invoice date. Without that, a month's delay in payment turns a good negotiation into a bad one.
And if the client is abroad, settle who pays the transfer costs before signing.
When to say no
When the client wants unlimited rights without paying for them. When the brief changes three times before you start. When they ask you to work for free "as a test". And when the price falls below your floor.
Saying no frees your calendar for the client who will pay. It is a commercial decision, not a matter of pride.
Where to go next
Negotiating well rests on a portfolio that justifies the price. Our guide on how to become a UGC creator explains how to build one.
