Living off UGC in Costa Rica is possible, but one factor dominates everything else: seasonality. The market is not flat, and planning without accounting for that is the number one cause of people giving up.
The basic maths
Work out how much you need per month to live, in dollars, and add thirty per cent for taxes, social security and quiet months.
If you need twelve hundred dollars a month, your real target is around fifteen hundred. At an average price of a hundred and fifty dollars per video, that is about ten pieces a month.
The real problem: the season
From December to April, there is more work than you can take. From May to November, tourism drops and with it a large share of demand.
A creator who invoices three thousand dollars in February and four hundred in September does not have a business: they have a rollercoaster. And most people quit in the second September, not the first.
Three ways to flatten the year
Monthly packages
Sell the hotel a twelve month agreement with two pieces a month instead of eight pieces in January. It earns less per piece and gives you cash all year.
Non seasonal sectors
Cosmetics, health, services and free zone companies buy in September as much as in February. Having one or two of those balances the portfolio.
Foreign clients
The Costa Rican low season means nothing to a United States brand. It is the best hedge against local seasonality.
The seasonal saving rule
During high season, put aside thirty per cent of everything you invoice above your floor. This is not general advice: it is the condition for reaching November without anxiety.
The creators who survive the second year are exactly the ones who did this in the first.
When not to quit yet
- If you do not have at least four months of expenses saved, not three, because of seasonality.
- If you have never worked through a full low season doing this.
- If more than half your revenue comes from tourism.
- If more than half comes from a single client.
The advantage that does exist
The cost of living outside the metropolitan area is low and income can be in dollars. That asymmetry makes the threshold reachable, provided the year is flattened.
