Most creators who abandon UGC do not fail for lack of talent. They fail because of seven habits that quietly drain the business, month after month.

1. Charging by the hour instead of by deliverable

If you improve and take half the time, you earn half. It is a model that punishes experience.

Charge by piece and by licence. Your speed should raise your margin, not cut it.

2. Signing the perpetual assignment without invoicing it

This is the most expensive mistake in the French market. The "perpetual, all media, worldwide" clause appears in almost every agency contract, and most creators sign it without adding a line to the quote.

It is worth two to three times a six month licence. Do not refuse it, price it.

3. Forgetting that contributions apply to revenue

They are calculated on what you collect, not on your profit. Buying a microphone does not reduce them.

At every payment received, immediately set the percentage aside in a separate account. Those who wait for the quarterly declaration are exactly the ones who end up overdrawn.

4. Not watching the VAT threshold

Many discover it in November, after crossing it. Watch your running total from June: crossing it is not a problem, discovering it afterwards is.

5. Not writing down the scope

Without an email stating the number of pieces, the rounds of changes and the formats, the project grows on its own. Three videos become seven, at the same price.

Two rounds included, the third is quoted. In writing, always.

6. Depending on a single agency

An agency that loses its client makes you lose half your revenue overnight. The healthy rule: no single buyer should exceed thirty per cent of monthly income.

7. Underestimating the calendar troughs

August is dead and January starts slowly. The creator who has not sold packages in September spends the winter hoping.

The silent mistake

Producing without selling. Many creators spend weeks improving their editing and zero hours writing to brands. In a market as mature as France, quality alone is no longer enough to get noticed.

Where to go next

Avoiding these seven mistakes is worth more than any technical improvement. Our guide on how to become a UGC creator covers the base of the craft.
