Lille is a market creators underestimate, and that is exactly what makes it interesting. The region hosts several of the largest French retail groups, a dense ecommerce logistics fabric, a big student population and Paris an hour away by train. Plenty of budget, little competition.
An economy of retail, logistics and students
Retail structures everything. The region's large groups, their own labels and their suppliers sustain an entire ecosystem of head offices, agencies and providers. These are formal buyers, used to working with suppliers rather than informal collaborations.
Alongside sits ecommerce logistics, with warehouses and brands selling online across northern Europe. On top of it all, a very dense student city feeding restaurants, gyms, fashion and nightlife.
The sectors that hire in Lille
- Retail and own labels: consumer goods, homeware, food, with recurring video needs for advertising and product pages.
- Ecommerce and logistics: online brands and providers, buying creative every month.
- Fashion and textiles: regional brands, vintage shops and ready to wear, with a young audience.
- Restaurants: brasseries, northern beers, restaurants and delivery, with a strong local culture.
- Beauty and wellness: salons, hair, gyms and clinics, with the care health advertising requires.
- Services and B2B: software, business services and real estate, discovering short form.
The large account, a different client
Working with a retail group has nothing to do with a neighbourhood shop. Decision cycles are longer, there is a tender or at least a purchasing framework, and payment goes through a supplier department.
In return, volumes are real and jobs repeat. To get in: a clear legal status, a compliant invoice, a written proposal with scope and detailed usage rights, and patience. Being referenced with a large account is often worth a year of prospecting.
Filming in the north with northern light
The weather is an accepted constraint: overcast skies much of the year. It is also a technical gift, because diffuse light is the best free light for product and for skin, with no hard shadows and no blown highlights.
What you need to prepare is the interior: a large window, a white bounce, a lapel microphone and a neutral background cover the vast majority of briefs. The rest is consistency.
What creators charge
As a French reference: a single video runs a hundred and ten to two hundred euros at the start, and two hundred to four hundred euros with a strong portfolio. Packs of three to five videos sell between four hundred and fifty and twelve hundred euros. Large accounts pay above that, with usage rights often broader than usual, which must be priced explicitly. Travel to Paris is invoiced as its own line.
Where to go next
Lille offers structured buyers, volume and Paris an hour away, with far fewer creators in front of you than elsewhere. To turn that into paid work, our guide on how to become a UGC creator covers building the portfolio, setting prices and closing the first collaborations.
