Most creators who abandon UGC do not fail for lack of talent. They fail because of seven habits that quietly drain the business, month after month.
1. Living off trade deals
This is mistake number one in the Costa Rican tourism sector. Accommodation, tours and meals do not pay rent or taxes.
Trades are useful for building a portfolio in the first months and for maintaining relationships. They do not work as an income model, and never for material headed to paid media.
2. Giving away paid media rights
A video running for six months in ads aimed at the United States is worth far more than one posted on the hotel's own channels. The difference is charged separately, always.
3. Not limiting the licence to one property
You film for one lodge and the video ends up on the channels of the group's other five properties. At the same price.
One line prevents it: "licence valid for property X; extension to other properties is quoted separately."
4. Not planning for the low season
Invoicing three thousand dollars in February and four hundred in September is not a business: it is a rollercoaster. Without monthly packages, non seasonal sectors or foreign clients, the second September pushes you out of the craft.
5. Not issuing electronic invoices
Without an electronic receipt, half the clients who pay well cannot hire you. It is a formality, not a barrier, and it unlocks formal hotels, agencies and free zone companies.
6. Neglecting gear in the humidity
It sounds minor and it is not. Lenses, microphones and batteries degrade faster than people expect. An airtight box with silica costs a few dollars and saves replacing equipment every year.
7. Charging local prices to international clients
A video a United States creator invoices at five hundred dollars is not worth eighty because you live in Cartago. Charge the price of the market you sell to.
The silent mistake
Producing without selling. Many creators spend weeks improving their editing and zero hours writing to hotels and brands. Quality does not compensate for the absence of outreach, and in a small market outreach matters even more.
Where to go next
Avoiding these seven mistakes is worth more than any technical improvement. Our guide on how to become a UGC creator covers the base of the craft.
