Living off UGC in France is possible, and the market is mature enough to allow it. But the calculation involves two numbers most people forget, and they explain the majority of people who give up.

The full calculation

Work out how much you need per month to live. Then add social contributions, levied on collected revenue rather than on profit, and a cushion for quiet months.

That combination usually adds thirty to forty per cent to the initial figure. If you need eighteen hundred euros net, your real revenue target is around two thousand five hundred.

At an average price of two hundred and fifty euros per video, that is ten pieces a month. Producing them is not the problem; selling them every month is.

The recurring client rule

A creator who lives off this does not have ten different clients a month. They have three or four taking two or three pieces each.

That is the real threshold: three or four recurring clients on a monthly package. With that, the base is covered before the month starts.

The VAT threshold, the number people forget

As long as you stay below the exemption threshold, you invoice without VAT. The day you cross it, your listed prices mechanically become more expensive for clients who cannot reclaim VAT, and your administration gets more complex.

That is not a reason to stay small: it is a reason to anticipate it. Many creators discover the threshold in November, after crossing it, and spend the end of the year putting things right.

Watch your running total from June onwards.

When not to quit yet

  • If you do not have at least three months of expenses saved.
  • If your UGC income has not covered your floor for three consecutive months.
  • If more than half your revenue comes from a single client, or a single agency.
  • If you have never had a bad month.

The healthy path in France is almost always hybrid: keep the job, produce in the evenings and at weekends, and go full time when the side income matches the salary for a quarter.

The predictable troughs

August is dead in France, and January starts slowly. December is busy because brands produce for the holidays and the sales.

The creator who sells packages in September gets through the winter; the one who waits for January endures it.

Where to go next

Living off UGC is a consequence of selling methodically, not of producing more. Our guide on how to become a UGC creator covers that base.
