Working for clients abroad is the fastest way to raise your average rate from Spain. It is also where creators most often get invoicing wrong, because the invoice changes according to two things: where the client is, and whether they are a company with a valid EU VAT number.

The three cases

A company client in the European Union with a valid VAT number. Your invoice goes without Spanish VAT, with the reverse charge mention, and you need to be registered for intra community operations. Always check that their number is valid before issuing.

A client outside the European Union, for example the United States or the United Kingdom. As a general rule the service carries no Spanish VAT, but the transaction is still declared. They may ask you for a tax form of their own country.

A private individual abroad. This differs from the company case and is worth checking, because it does not work the same way.

In all three cases the transaction exists, is declared and is kept on file. The idea that a payment from abroad is invisible is exactly the kind of mistake that surfaces two years later.

How to get paid without losing money

Agree the currency before starting. If you invoice in dollars and receive euros, somebody absorbs the exchange, and by default that will be you.

Choose the payment method by looking at the fee and the real exchange rate, not only the advertised fee. On small amounts, the difference between platforms is a visible part of your margin.

Put payment terms and a date on the invoice. International clients work with thirty day cycles as a matter of course.

Ask for a deposit on the first job. It is standard practice and it protects exactly the case you cannot comfortably pursue from another country.

What raises your rate abroad

Delivering in two languages, subtitles included. Answering within twenty four hours. Having a one page contract ready in English. And invoicing correctly, because a foreign company needs an invoice its accounting will accept.

Those four things separate you from most of the supply and justify a higher price better than any expensive equipment.

Foreign clients pay more because they are buying less friction. Our guide on how to become a UGC creator covers pricing, usage rights and outreach.
