France regulates alcohol advertising by listing what an advertisement may contain, rather than by banning specific messages. That inversion is the single most useful thing a brand can understand about this category: anything not on the list is not permitted, so the brief has to be built from the list outward.
What the law allows
Broadly, an advertisement may state the degree of alcohol, the origin, the denomination, the composition, the name and address of the producer and distributors, the mode of production, the way the product should be served, its consumption terms, and references to protected designations and to production areas. A health message is mandatory.
What is therefore excluded is everything that sells a feeling: celebration, friendship, seduction, success, sport, relaxation, courage. A video showing friends laughing over a bottle is not a stylistic choice, it is outside the frame.
The brief that works inside the frame
This is not a limitation on quality. Some of the best drinks content in the world is made under these rules.
| Brief section | What to write |
|---|---|
| The place | Vineyard, distillery, orchard, soil, weather, buildings. |
| The process | Harvest, pressing, distillation, ageing, bottling, hands doing the work. |
| The composition | Grape variety, ingredients, degree, what makes this different from the next bottle. |
| The service | Temperature, glass, decanting, what it goes with on a plate. |
| The designation | Origin, protected name, region, history of the appellation. |
Note that all five are informative, and that informative content performs well because people watching a drinks video are usually already curious.
The hard rules for creators and brands
No minors, in frame or as an audience. No consumption presented as a benefit. No link to driving. The mandatory health message must appear and be legible. Paid partnerships must be labelled clearly, which the 2023 influence law reinforced.
Platform rules add another layer, often stricter, including age gating requirements that vary by network.
Practical notes
Ask the producer for the exact wording on appellation, vintage and awards, and use it. Protected names have legal definitions and a producer group defends them.
Film the harvest when it happens. It is a few weeks a year and it is the most valuable footage a domain can own.
Agree usage rights with a country list, because a video that is compliant in France may be unusable in another market, and a video made for another market is often unusable in France.
Where to go next
Wine and spirits reward brands that treat the legal frame as the creative brief. Our complete UGC guide for brands covers briefing, usage rights and running creator content as a repeatable process.
