Almost every UGC creator starts as a registered self employed professional and many should stay there. The question is not which structure sounds more professional, but from what point staying self employed costs you money.
The tipping point
There are three signals, and at least two should appear at once.
Your annual profit is high and stable
Not one good year, but a predictable base. As profit rises, so does the income tax rate, and beyond a certain level company taxation starts to compensate.
You no longer invoice only your own work
You subcontract editing, work with another creator, resell production. That stops looking like a professional and starts looking like a company.
You need to separate risk
Large contracts, commitments to international brands, expensive equipment, employees. A company limits liability in a way a sole trader cannot.
What the alternative brings
A company is not only a way to pay less. It brings formal accounting, annual accounts, more periodic obligations and a noticeably higher cost for professional advice. It also brings a detail that surprises people: if you work in your own company, you have to pay yourself a salary and contribute, so the saving is smaller than the first calculation suggests.
That is why the honest answer is that this decision is made with concrete numbers, not with a general rule from the internet. One consultation with an adviser using your real figures costs less than a year of the wrong structure.
What is worth doing beforehand
Separate bank accounts. Keep a clean record of income and expenses. Have a standard contract and a written rate card. And know your profit, not your turnover: they are different things and only one of them is taxed.
If you do those four things, the day a company makes sense the transition will be administrative rather than traumatic.
The short answer
If you invoice irregularly and work alone, stay self employed and spend the energy on winning recurring clients. If your profit is high and stable, if you hire someone, or if you take on large risks, sit down with an adviser and do the maths.
