The first client is the most expensive to win and the least well paid. After that the mechanics change: the second arrives through the first, and the third through the second. The whole game is shortening the distance to the first one.

The first client does not come from where you expect

Almost nobody lands a first order by posting on their own channels. It comes from direct outreach, from a marketplace, or from someone who already knew you. What the three have in common: somebody watched a video of yours before money was mentioned.

The three channels, ranked by speed

The fastest is the marketplace, because the brand arrives with a budget already decided. The second is direct outreach, slower but better paid when it lands. The third is word of mouth, which only starts after one clean delivery, and then becomes the main channel in Portugal.

Brands that already buy videos

These are the easiest: they know what they are buying, they have a budget, and mostly they are looking to replace a creator who stopped. You spot them by their recent ads, where the same face has been running for months. A brand running the same video for six months is a brand that needs new content.

Brands that have never bought any

They often pay less and take longer, because the format has to be explained before anything can be sold. They have one advantage: nobody else is approaching them. In Portugal that category is wide, especially in local services and small online retail.

The message that gets a reply

An effective outreach message fits in five lines and is not about you. It is about what the brand sells, what is missing from what it publishes, and what you deliver to answer that.

The three lines that decide

The first names the brand and one precise thing it sells, which proves the message was not sent to two hundred addresses. The second says what you deliver, in what format and by when. The third gives a link to two videos, not ten. The rest is politeness.

What never to write

Not "I am passionate", not "I am starting out and building a portfolio", and no offer of free work. All three tell the buyer the same thing: this person has no client yet. A brand is not buying your journey, it is buying a file delivered on a date.

What to have ready before writing

Three videos visible in one click, a price per package, a stated turnaround, and a way to get paid. Writing to a brand before those four exist loses the contact at the moment it replies, because the reply arrives with a question you cannot answer.

How many messages, and at what pace

Twenty careful messages beat two hundred identical ones, and the pace matters as much as the number: five a week, followed up once after eight days, then dropped. One follow-up is enough. Two irritate, and an irritated brand does not come back when its need appears.

What a marketplace changes

On a marketplace the brand arrives with a budget and a deadline, so the conversation starts after the decision to buy instead of before it. The profile replaces the outreach message, and reviews replace references. It is the shortest route to a first order, and also the one where the price is least often negotiated, because it is displayed.
