Going from one off jobs to a real business does not depend on producing more videos. In Costa Rica it depends on two things: charging per month instead of per piece, and flattening the seasonality.
The monthly package, the main lever
A hotel that buys four videos in January is worth six hundred dollars. The same hotel on a twelve month agreement with two pieces a month is worth more than three times that, and it gives you cash in September.
The conversion is simple and almost nobody does it. When you deliver the second job, send a proposal: "I can see you need new content every season. I can do two pieces a month all year at this price, with fixed delivery."
For the hotel it is a better deal than concentrating everything in January, because it keeps their channels alive in low season. You just have to explain it.
The four clients that change everything
With four monthly agreements, your base is covered before the month begins, in any month of the year. That is the moment the craft stops being a series of jobs and becomes a business.
The mix that flattens the year
A healthy Costa Rican portfolio combines three things: tourism in high season, a non seasonal sector such as health or coffee, and at least one foreign client.
A creator with that mix has neither peaks nor troughs. A creator who works only in tourism has both.
How to raise rates
Apply the new price to new clients for two or three months. Once you see they still hire you, tell recurring clients a month in advance.
The right moment is August or September, before season budgets close. Raising in January, with everything already allocated, does not work.
Learning to say no
Say no to trade deals for advertising material, to the client who wants unlimited rights without paying, the one who changes the brief three times, the one who pays late twice in a row.
In high season this matters especially: every yes to a bad client takes the slot of a good one, and the calendar is finite.
When to delegate
When editing consumes more hours than production and selling combined. Handing off the edit frees up what pays best: filming and selling.
The sign that you have arrived
You start turning work away in January. Not out of arrogance, but because the calendar is full at a price that suits you. That is the moment to raise again.
Where to go next
Scaling in Costa Rica is as much a calendar decision as a pricing one. Our guide on how to become a UGC creator covers the base it is built on.
