Edmonton is a working city. Industry, trades, logistics and a large public sector keep it steady, and the winter is long enough to reshape how a creator plans an entire year of shooting.
Winter is half the year, so plan for it
From November to March, outdoor product work is barely possible and daylight is short. The creators who bill through winter are the ones who built a reliable indoor corner and say so in their pitch. Outdoor content gets filmed in September for the whole cold season.
Trades and industry pay and do not film
Welding shops, equipment suppliers, transport companies, construction and industrial services all sell to other businesses and almost none has its own video. What they need is capability, safety and reliability shown plainly. It is not glamorous and it pays better than most consumer work here.
The university and the public sector
A large university, the provincial government and the health network create a steady base of communication work. Slower processes, formal procurement, but the mandates recur and payment is dependable.
Festivals concentrate the summer
The city packs an unusual number of festivals into a short summer. For food, retail and hospitality clients, that window is most of their year. Content has to be shot before it starts, not during, because everyone is too busy to sit for a briefing in July.
Do not price like Toronto, do not price like a small town
Costs here sit below Vancouver and Toronto but the clients are companies with real budgets. Benchmark against what the work costs you, including travel across a spread out city in winter conditions, not against a rate you saw quoted somewhere else.
