Drugstore chains are among the biggest advertisers in Brazil, and the category behind them, dermocosmetics and personal care, is one of the most active buyers of creator content in the country. It is also the category where the rules are least understood by the people briefing it.

Why the category buys so much video

A pharmacy sells the same sunscreen as the one two blocks away. What differs is advice and price. Brazilian consumers are used to asking at the counter, and video reproduces that conversation at scale: someone explains a routine, shows a texture, says who a product suits.

Dermocosmetics brands buy for a different reason: their products cost several times a supermarket alternative, and someone has to justify that in ordinary language.

The line between a cosmetic and a medicine

This is where briefs go wrong. A cosmetic cares for skin and hair. A medicine treats a condition. The words that belong to medicine, treats, cures, heals, eliminates, are not available to a cosmetic brief, and medicine advertising to the general public is restricted in Brazil, with prescription products essentially off limits.

Practical rules that keep everyone safe:

  • The brand sends the approved claim in writing, exactly as it should be said.
  • The creator does not wear a lab coat and does not present themselves as a pharmacist, dermatologist or nutritionist.
  • No diagnosis of the viewer, and no promise of a medical result.
  • Supplements follow their own labelling rules; a supplement is not a treatment.
  • The partnership is clearly labelled.

If a brief involves anything sold behind the counter, ask the brand to confirm what is permitted before accepting it.

The formats that work

The routine

Three or four products in order, morning or night, with the reason for each step.

The texture close up

How it spreads, how it absorbs, whether it leaves a white cast on brown skin. This last point matters enormously in Brazil and most brand content ignores it.

The honest comparison

Two options for two skin types, with a clear recommendation.

The pharmacy visit

For a chain: the aisle, the promotion, the loyalty programme, the staff answering a question, filmed with permission.

The seasonal brief

Sunscreen all year but especially before summer, dryness and lips in the dry season, repellent when arbovirus campaigns start.

Practical notes for the brand

Send the permitted wording and the forbidden words with the brief. Ask for one version with no claim at all so the video can run in more places. Agree usage rights by scope and duration, because dermocosmetics content is reused in paid media for months. And keep before and after honest: an exaggerated result costs a pharmacy brand more than a modest one earns.
