Comparing the price of these two purchases makes no sense, because they do not intervene at the same moment in the decision. One arrives before the question, the other after.
What you are buying in each case
With influence, access to an audience and the recommendation of a person it trusts.
With UGC, a production and a right of use. The creator does not need an audience: they need to be able to film, speak clearly and deliver on time.
The same person can do both, but they are two invoices and two logics.
Where each sits in the journey
That is the only useful way of telling them apart.
Influence upstream: discovery, awareness, launch, entering a market. UGC downstream: advertising to a cold audience, product page, retargeting, answering objections, follow-up email.
A brand with no awareness problem but a conversion problem does not need influence, whatever the price.
What changes in the price
The price of influence follows the audience and the rarity of the person.
The price of UGC follows the work: the number of videos, the complexity of the shoot, the duration and breadth of the licence, the urgency. That is why a batch of videos often costs less than a single post on a followed account, while leaving more material to run.
The most frequent mistake in Spain
Paying for a post, finding it good, wanting to put it behind ads, and discovering that this was not provided for.
The advertising use of content published by somebody else is negotiated and written down in advance, with a duration and channels. Added to that are transparency obligations about the commercial nature of the post, whose form depends on the channel and the agreement, and which are checked before going live.
What the audience punishes
An overly commercial tone, in both formats.
An influencer post resembling an advert loses the trust it was supposed to convey. An over-polished UGC video is filed as advertising in two seconds. The market is particularly sensitive to both signals.
So in both cases keep a hesitation, a restart, a detail that serves no purpose.
How to make them work together
In this order, and not the other.
Start with a few UGC videos behind ads, to find out which arguments get a reaction. Then use those lessons to brief an influence operation: you will know what catches, and the person will not waste their time on a message that does not work.
The reverse order costs more and teaches less.
Two spends, two natures
| What you look at | The creator video | The influence post |
|---|---|---|
| The main cost | The production work | Access to an audience |
| The duration of effect | As long as the brand runs it | The post's lifespan |
| What can be measured | Cost per acquisition | Reach and engagement |
What is negotiated separately in both cases
The rights. Reusing an influence post as paid advertising is not included by default, and a brand doing it without agreement is as exposed as with a poorly framed creator video.
What to test before settling a budget
The same message in both formats. Three creator videos pushed as ads against one influence post, over the same period: that is the only comparison that says anything useful.
The reasonable starting point
Three or four videos, two creators, two angles, run on a cold audience.
That is the minimum volume that teaches you something, and it is also what will let you decide, with figures rather than intuition, whether an influence operation makes sense for you.
